In August 2014, the first phase of the construction of Chengdu Smart Museum was officially launched. According to the construction plan approved by the Chengdu Development and Reform Commission, the project was organized and implemented by the Chengdu Cultural Relics Information Consulting Center and was first piloted in Jinsha Ruins Museum, Wuhou Temple Museum, and Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum. As the only national-level smart museum demonstration unit in Sichuan, Jinsha Ruins Museum started construction as early as March of that year, becoming the “vanguard” in this technological upgrade.
So, what is the “smart” of the so-called “smart museum”?
One of the answers is hidden in a small UHF RFID tag (ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification tag). By introducing UHF RFID technology, the museum can realize the intelligent upgrade of multiple functions such as ticket sales, admission, behavior tracking, and data collection without interfering with tourists’ visits. When tourists enter the exhibition hall with electronic tickets, the access control system automatically identifies their identity information and records relevant behavior data in the background, such as exhibition areas with longer stays, types of exhibits with concentrated interests, and the origin and age of the visitors.
By analyzing the data collected by UHF RFID tags, exhibition managers can adjust exhibition strategies in a timely manner, or launch personalized guided tour recommendations for different groups of people, or even design cultural and creative products based on tourists’ preferences.
It is worth mentioning that the Jinsha Ruins Museum also combines an APP system to provide tourists with real-time location-based explanations, route recommendations, and surrounding “food, accommodation, travel and tourism” integrated services, truly realizing an innovative model of promoting cultural communication with technology. Behind all this, the accuracy and stability of UHF RFID tags are indispensable.
Tags used in scenes such as the Jinsha Ruins generally use an operating frequency of 860~960MHz, comply with ISO18000-6C / EPC Class1 Gen2 protocol, and have good versatility and compatibility. Its passive chip design does not require battery power, is environmentally friendly and durable, and can withstand more than 100,000 data reads and writes. At the same time, the tag can be stably printed and read on various materials—such as coated paper, PET, thermal paper, etc.—which can adapt to the use needs in different exhibition environments.
In actual operation, the RFID reader emits electromagnetic waves, and the tag is activated after receiving energy. It then receives instructions and responds quickly. The whole process does not require human intervention, realizing accurate and efficient visitor management. Whether it is a normal temperature environment or a relatively humid summer climate, UHF RFID tags can operate stably in various temperature working environments ranging from -25℃ to 50℃, ensuring uninterrupted collection of required data.
The construction of a smart museum is not just a pile of technology but an upgrade of concepts. Through UHF RFID tags, traditional cultural spaces are gradually becoming “warm and understand your heart.” From entering the museum to leaving the museum, every stop and every pause of the audience may become a key data source for improving services and optimizing experience.
The application of UHF RFID tags is far more than museums. They also play an important role in many industries such as security access control, membership management, brand interaction, exhibition check-in, retail tracking, and environmental recycling. The practice of the Jinsha Ruins Smart Museum is just a wonderful interpretation of this technology in a cultural scene.
